Hak5 is the Internet Television show for the hacker, modder, and do-it-yourself. With high quality tech entertainment and all things hack and mod. You’ll find yourself breaking out the soldering iron with Wess Tobler or yielding networks (in)secure with Darren Kitchen. So join the gang on the 5th of each month for an engaging hour of technology and geek humor.

Created by co-hosts Darren Kitchen, Wess Tobler and Alanna Buehring in 2005, Hak.5 is a television show for geek’s, hackers, and do-it-yourselfers distributed online. Inspired by former Tech TV’s The Screen Savers (1998-2005), Hak.5 started as an underground attempt to bring back tech entertainment. Within its first few months on air the show had become a hit among tech enthusiasts while mainstream media had begun to notice the booming Internet television world. Since then Hak.5 has appeared on G4TechTV’s Call for Help with Leo Laporte and Torrent with Amber MacArthur and Matt Harris, as well as in Wired Magazine, PC Format Magazine, the Computer America Radio show, the TWiT podcast, and even Adventures of Superman.
The show is known for its high production quality and independence from a studio or channel sponsor.

Hak.5 broadcasts on the fifth of each month in XviD, iPod, Windows Media Video formats. The show is distributed via RSS, iTunes, YouTube, and Veoh. During the two month off season for Hak.5, there are plans on shooting an RC1 of Hak.5 Live.

Definitely worthy of a download.

Visit Phil’s site at http://www.crescentstation.net/ You can listen on his site or click what is a podcast for more downloading options. Its available on iTunes and Podiobooks.com and is well worth the download, Just like with Sigler I can’t wait for each episode.

Crescent is dark science fiction at it’s most visceral. Phil Rossi weaves a tale that is reminiscent of old school Stephen King but with a shiny, new set of tricks and an appetite to terrify. There’s sex. There’s corruption. There’s horror. And after you sweat your way through the first chapter, there’s plenty more to keep you awake at night.

Some places are far darker than deep space. Places where the shadows smile. Where men go mad and lovers go missing. These stygian corners of existence are where reality is stretched thin and something hungry is waiting just outside the corner of your eye.

Jack Wakes Up is about what happens when Jack Palms, a one-hit wonder ex-action-movie actor hits the streets of San Francisco to help a group of Czech drug buyers make one big score, a drug deal that he hopes will set
him up for life. But when things turn difficult, he has to decide what side of acting and action he’s really on.

What does a movie-star one-hit-wonder and ex-drug-addict do when he’s cleaned up, down on his luck, and running out of money? In the three years since Jack Palms went clean – no drugs, no drinking, no life – he’s added fourteen pounds of muscle, read 83 books, and played it as straight as anyone can ask him. Now, when an old friend from L.A. calls, he signs on to help a set of Eastern Europeans score enough coke to settle down and set up shop. All Jack has to do is keep them entertained.

Jack is back with Jack Palms 2 This is life. In the Thrilling second installment.

Listen to the promo

He’s back… This Is Life marks the return of Jack Palms for this summer’s podcast blockbuster!! If Jack Wakes Up rocked you in 06, get ready to be doubly rocked in 07. This Is Life comes in two thrilling parts. Part I starts June 3rd…

Shows typically last 45 minutes to an hour and combine information, do-it-yourself projects and special guests, served up with wry humor and notable spoofs on technology. Cast members have also appeared on other more well known and mainstream shows such as Call For Help, Torrent (TV series), and Computer America. The Hak.5 logo appeared alongside CommandN and This Week In Tech in an issue of the “Adventures of Superman” (Issue #648). Hak.5 has also been featured by Wired Magazine (Issue #14.05, May 2006) as must-see IPTV ubergeeks.

http://hak5.org/

The show was created in 2005 by the co-hosts Darren Kitchen and Wess Tobler in a small homemade studio in Williamsburg, Virginia. Other production members include Paul “the camera guy” Tobias and Alanna (Alli) Buehring, who airs segments including monthly trivia, questions, and polls.

Contributors to the show have included Amber MacArthur, Leo Laporte, Frank Linhares, Mike Lazazzera, Kevin Mitnick, and Jenn Cutter among others. The show’s theme and music score is composed by Ashley Witt with additional music and graphics by Pronobozo. The show is primarily produced by a core of local friends who are the reoccurring guests.

Cast and Crew

* Darren Kitchen — gained his interest in photography and film at the age of nine when he began shooting stop-motion movies with Lego and a VHS camcorder. From there, his interest in film production grew, and he devoted more of his time to working behind the camera. He started programming computers at the age of ten in QBasic, and branched out to his now favorite language, PHP

* Wess Tobler — generally hosts segments with hardware hacks and modifications. Wess may be better known for being the creator of Evil Server or for his repeated faux physical assaults on Darren. Since a lot of Wess’ projects involve LEDs this has become his running joke: Wess is often called Led-man or gets suggested to add leds to practically anything, from a toaster to various body parts and more.

* Alanna Buehring — met cohosts Darren and Wess while in high school. She has since held a number of roles in theater production and other related tasks. Since the inception of Hak5, she has brought many of these skills (L) to the monthly production. During each episode, Alli handles the monthly trivia and poll and is often a key player in the humorous sketches throughout the show.

* Paul Tobias — is an associate producer and technical researcher back stage and in the labs at Hak.5. Paul often hosts Linux and Macintosh related segments and can be seen running the broadcast console during live shows.

Ask A Ninja is an award-winning series of comedy videos about the image of ninjas in popular culture available in podcast and vodcast form, as well as in mov and wmv file formats.

The series, created by Los Angeles improvisational comedians Kent Nichols and Douglas Sarine, features a ninja who answers e-mails from “viewers” Ninja is known for his emphatic declarations, as well as his expansive, spontaneous, and often extremely exaggerated hand gestures (helpful in communicating his comedic intent, as one can only see his eyes). Ninja is also fond of using linguistic blends in his speech, particularly those involving the word “ninja” (“ninjelephant,” “ninternships,” “chickinjas,” “caninjas,” “minjas,” etc.).

Video editing is often used for emphasis, such as showing him doing the same throwing motion three times. It is also used to emphasize his mysterious ninja powers, which include the ability to adopt impenetrable disguises, and to make himself microscopically small (Ninjascopic). Recently the Ninja has begun to answer questions in a way that the asker did not intend. For example in “Ninja Dates” the question was asked, “What kind of dates do Ninjas go on?” The Ninja responded “You ask this as if ninjas stop on some dates. There is not a date on the calendar on which we do not go.” The episodes feature constant and erratic camera-angle changes. In Special Delivery 10: “Pop!Tech” the Ninja makes reference to this erratic editing, explaining that during the course of filming each episode he has 14 or 15 ninjas trying to kill him while he’s filming, so he has to edit all the ninjas out of it so that the episode does not consist solely of thrilling fight sequences.

Each episode usually ranges from two to three minutes, usually ending with Ninja’s signature remark to each questioner: “I look forward to killing you soon!” (or some variation thereof, usually relating to the episode e.g. ‘I look forward to playing through you soon!’). New episodes are usually released bi-weekly. Starting with Episode 23, “Ninternships”, the behind-the-scenes-team decided to have sponsors for their episodes.

And don’t forget visit the Ninja Mart store and buy the DVD

The term podiobooks was coined by Evo Terra to describe serialized audio books which are made available in podcast format. Listeners to Podiobooks.com can choose to receive the episodes of their books via an RSS feed or by listening to episodes by directly downloading episodes from this site. Some listeners keep the audio files on their computers, some transfer the book to CD, but most transfer the file on to their mp3 player so they can listen no matter where they are.

It’s kinda like books on tape for a new generation. Some people also call them Podcast novels. There are around 100 books available of all types, and more are added all the time. Best of all, there is no charge for them. But they do accept donations.

Why are the books on Podiobooks.com free of charge? Many authors do this to get exposure for their work, others do it in the hopes you’ll buy their next work in development. Still others simply do it for the sheer joy of writing. And while it’s not required, you have the option to donate money to the author of your choice. When you consider that audio books run usually 50% more than their hardcover counterparts… we hope you’ll be generous. Authors receive 75% of all the proceeds from the donations from listeners. The smaller portion goes to the maintenance and upkeep of Podiobooks.com.

Check them out. The episodes can be subscribed to on iTunes, downloaded or watched from their site. They offer 68 shows so far. Everthing from adding a hard drive to Voip.

Lab Rats is the brainchild of Sean Carruthers and Andy Walker. When the two technology journalists saw that podcasts were taking the Internet by storm they figure it couldn’t be that hard to make TV for the web. They were wrong. It was really hard, but after a month or so of messing about, they got to it and shot a pilot episode in Oct. 2005 called episode zero. Again they got it all wrong.

There were shadows and bad audio and a bad couch. So they begged TV genius Matt Harris, who produced Andy’s field segments while Andy co-hosted Call for Help, for some assistance. Harris, who is also the associate producer of Call for Help, said he’d help only if he didn’t miss the Bruins play, so the first episode was shot between periods of a Bruins game (which they lost), but Lab Rats was summarily born.

In the middle of all of this, Sony kindly chipped in a couple of cameras and Canon fixed Sean’s GL-1. Then Geo Perdis (see below), long time pal of Andy’s (both worked on MSN.ca years ago) offered lighting help and gear.

This week we look at Revision3 for the Podcast Crate.

Podcast of the Week.

 2-24-07

Revision3 http://revision3.com/

Revision3 is the first media company that gets it, born from the Internet, on-demand generation. Unlike aggregators, mash-ups, clients and web sites, Revision3 is an actual TV network for the web, creating, producing its own original entertainment and content.

The content is designed for a new audience. This audience, like television, expects dependability and quality, but unlike television, wants a more gritty, edgy, highly-targeted and in-depth form of entertainment. With the proliferation of mobile video, iPods, Tivo and other Internet-connected set-top-boxes, video that is both on-demand and tailored to suit will be Revision3’s specialty. Revision3 delivers technology, comedy, music, cooking, and more, all with the familiar faces you all know with years of experience.

Finally, Revision3’s philosophy on content is neutral to how it is distributed. We will work with almost any distribution platform; iTunes, Odeo, Bittorrent, Palm, you name it…and using every video encoding format available, including flash, making our content accessible to the greatest possible audience.

Who Are They?

Founded by Jay Adelson (Chairman, CEO of Digg, founder of Equinix), Kevin Rose (Founder and Chief Architect of Digg, TechTV, G4), David Prager (TechTV, G4), Dan Huard, and Ron Gorodetzky, Revision3 has been practicing out of a garage until fall, 2006. Even so, with over 1.5 million downloads a month, Revision3 has mastered the art of creating content, encoding and distribution. Now with funding from investors like Marc Andreessen and Greylock Partners, Revision3 has launched and is ready for prime time, or any time you like!

You can watch the programs right on the website or download them to watch on your computer or subscribe to them using iTunes or your favorite podcatcher.http://www.kevinscrate.com/blog/podcast-crate/
