.

Google Labs has now released the long awaited Offline viewing option for its famous Email client Gmail. So now you can sync your mail and read it offline if you wish. It does require you to install Google Gears found here. and it will only sync you newest 10,000 messages but that should be enough for most people. Then its pretty easy to enable the offline settings. It works in Internet Explorer and Firefox, but if you set it up on Firefox the decide to switch to IE you will need to perforn the install again and vise versa.

The first thing to do is see if you were offered it yet. Google say’s its rolling it out over the next few days so if you don’t have it yet you will be shortly.

So here goes, Head over to your inbox and click the little green beaker to get to the Labs section.

Look for Offline and click Enable.

Scroll doen to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes.

You will now be taken back to your inbox. At the top of the page next to Settings you will now notice a new option called Offline. Go ahead and give it a click.

You can now click next to install offline access.

Place a check mark in the I trust this site to use Google Gears. If you click Deny and want to change you mind later you will need to sign out of Gmail then sign back in and start the process over. This will give Google permission to use your hard drive to store your mail.

Create a shortcut next so you an access Gmail offline.

Now the installation will complete.

And the Synchronizing begins, depending on the amount of mail you have and the speed of your internet connection this could take a few minutes or in my case about an hour. The good news is you can still use Gmail while your waiting.

Now you’re all set of offline use.

And now back to your setting screen.

That all there is to it.

What happens if Google has a problem or deletes your account. (don’t laugh its happened) Here’a a program I found that will backup all your mail and attachments to your local computer and the backups are able to be opened in many desktop programs. The App is called Gmail Backup you can download it here.

After installing the program enter your Login info and password then choose where you want the backup stored then in the date field choose the date of your oldest email then click Backup, its that easy.

As you can see above you can also restore a backup if need be. Enjoy.

Here are a few tips you can use to unlock the power of Google search.

1. To use Google’s built-in calculator function, simply enter the calculation you’d like done into the search box and press enter. 1+1 enter.

2. To see the weather for many U.S. and worldwide cities, type “weather” followed by the city and state, U.S. zip code, or city and country.

3. To see current market data for a given company or fund, type the ticker symbol into the search box. On the results page, you can click the link to see more data from Google Finance.

4. To see the time in many cities around the world, type in “time” and the name of the city.

5. If you’re looking for results from Google Book Search, you can enter the name of the author or book title into the search box and we’ll return any book content we have as part of your normal web results. You can click through on the record to view more detailed info about that author or title.

Ready For a few more.

6. You can use Google to convert between many different units of measurement of height, weight, and mass among others. Just enter your desired conversion into the search box and we’ll do the rest.

7. To see a definition for a word or phrase, simply type the word “define” then a space, then the word(s) you want defined. To see a list of different definitions from various online sources, you can type “define:” followed by a word or phrase. Note that the results will define the entire phrase.

8. Google’s spell checking software automatically checks whether your query uses the most common spelling of a given word. If it thinks you’re likely to generate better results with an alternative spelling, it will ask “Did you mean: (more common spelling)?”. Click the suggested spelling to launch a Google search for that term.

9. If you’re looking for a store, restaurant, or other local business you can search for the category of business and the location and we’ll return results right on the page, along with a map, reviews, and contact information.

10. To see home listings in a given area type “housing”, “home”, or “real estate” and the name of a city or a U.S. zip code into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google Search button. Clicking the “Go” button on the results page will display details of individual homes that Google has indexed.

A couple more.

11. To see flight status for arriving and departing U.S. flights, type in the name of the airline and the flight number into the search box. You can also see delays at a specific airport by typing in the name of the city or three-letter airport code followed by the word “airport”.

12. To use our built-in currency converter, simply enter the conversion you’d like done into the Google search box and we’ll provide your answer directly on the results page.

13. Looking for a map? Type in the name or U.S. zip code of a location and the word “map” and we’ll return a map of that location. Clicking on the map will take you to a larger version on Google Maps.

14. You can track packages by typing the tracking number for your UPS, Fedex or USPS package directly into the search box. We’ll return results that include quick links to easily track the status of your shipment.

15. To search for U.S. patents, enter the word “patent” followed by the patent number into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google Search button.

16. To see the geographical location for any U.S. telephone area code, just type the three-digit area code into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google Search button.

Google launched a new web browser called Chrome yesterday, so far it seems to load web pages fasted than Firefox 3 and IE 7 and is displaying pages with no problems on every site I visited. It imported all my bookmarks without a problem. It’s a free download from Google.

One of the nice features of Chrome is the way it handles its tabs, each one is run as it’s own instance in Windows, what that means is when you look in the task manager each tab has its own entry so when you close a tab all that memory is released, also if a page crashes it won’t crash the whole program.

On the down side I miss my Firefox extensions and don’t think I can use it in place of Firefox until those features are added, But judge for yourself and check out the comic below.

Look under the hood of Google Chrome in this comics interpretation of key engineering decisions, by Scott McCloud.

Chrome also has a privacy mode, so that nothing that occurs in that window is ever logged on your computer. aka the “porn mode”

The default homepage also presents you with a kind of speed dial feature, like the one Opera has. On that page you will see your most visited webpages as 9 screenshot thumbnails. You will also see a few of your recent searches and your recently bookmarked pages, as well as recently closed tabs.

From Googles site:

Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier.

One box for everything
Type in the address bar and get suggestions for both search and web pages.

Thumbnails of your top sites
Access your favorite pages instantly with lightning speed from any new tab.

Shortcuts for your apps
Get desktop shortcuts to launch your favorite web applications.

Just when you thought you finally started to get the upper hand on spam in your inbox the insidious spammers have come with a new twist. Calendar Spam, unwanted meeting requests that popup in your calendar. If it hasn’t happened to you yet, O-boy it will. Here’s what happens.

Calendar spam arrives like all other spam, as an unwanted e-mail. But the problem is it also shows up as a meeting request in your calendar. That means at the time specified in the spam message, time on your calendar will be blocked off, triggering an annoying reminder at the appointed hour.

Your spam filter may still catch it and move it to the junk mail folders. but ignoring calendar spam doesn’t make it go away. Because of the way Microsoft Outlook and Google calendars work, unanswered calendar spam will usually find its way into your calendar.

To stop Microsoft Outlook from automatically accepting meeting requests follow the steps below.

In Outlook click Tools > options.

Calendar options.

Resource scheduling.

Remove the check mark next to Automatically accept meeting requests and process cancellations.

Click Ok 3 times and your set.

Outlook Express users don’t need to worry because Express doesn’t have a calendar.

To Fix Gmail

In Gmail’s calendar go Settings > General tab.

In the “Automatically add invitations to my calendar”, Put a ? in No, only show invitations to which I have responded

Click save.

As much as my Yahoo mail account is a spam magnet I haven’t had that problem yet.
if anyone has drop me a comment and we’ll try and get it fixed.

Paste this text in Google to find the song or artist your looking for.

intitle:index.of “mp3? +”name” -htm -html -php -asp “last modified”

All you need to do is replace name with the song or artist you want to find. In many cases you can download the song to your computer and bam free music. ( always scan the files before you open them with a good anti-virus first.) You can also change “mp3? to avi to find movies.

To download the files:

In IE7 right click and choose > Save target as.

In Firefox right click and choose > Save link as.

With about a hundred million stars and two hundred million galaxies, Sky in Google Earth lets you explore the heavens like never before.

With Earth’s new Sky feature, you can:

Zoom in to distant galaxies and nebulae

View constellations and the movements of the planets

Learn about the lifecycle of a star and different kinds of galaxies

Create and share your own imagery, placemarks and more

When you use Sky, the view is above your current location on Earth. For example, if you go to Paris and open Sky, you will see what is in the sky above Paris at the current time. When you exit Sky, you return to this same location.

(From Google)

Google Gears is an open source browser extension that lets developers create web applications that can run offline. Gears provides three key features:

* A local server, to cache and serve application resources (HTML, JavaScript, images, etc.) without needing to contact a server
* A database, to store and access data from within the browser
* A worker thread pool, to make web applications more responsive by performing expensive operations in the background

System requirements:
• Windows XP/Vista
• Firefox 1.5+ and Internet Explorer 6.0+

Google Gears (BETA) is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux
This is an early release of Google Gears (BETA). After installation, please pay attention to the warning dialogs and grant access only to websites that you trust.

Google Gears is currently an early-access developers’ release. It is not yet intended for use by real users in production applications at this time.

As part of our ongoing effort to make the world’s information universally accessible, we’re testing a free service called Google Voice Local Search. Using this service, you get fast access to the same local information you’d find on Google Maps. But you don’t need a computer, you don’t need an Internet connection, and you don’t even need to use your cell-phone keypad. It’s voice-activated, and you can access it from any phone (mobile or landline), in any location, at any time.

Here are a few of the features:

You can find a business listing by category. Just say “pizza,” for example.

You can send the listing details to your mobile phone via SMS.

The service is fully automated, so it doesn’t rely on human operators.

It connects you directly to the business, free of charge. However, your telephone company may apply regular charges for making a phone call or receiving an SMS.

Google Voice Local Search is still in its experimental stage. It may not be available at all times and may not work for all users. We’re fine-tuning the service to get better at recognizing our user’s requests and at finding the businesses they are looking for. It’s currently only available in English, in the US, for US business listings.

Today Picasa Web Albums has the most important update since its launch, in June 2006. Basically, it adds the most requested features and even some obscure features that will make you very happy.

First, the free version of Picasa Web gets 1 GB of storage (up from 250 MB), enough to host 4000 high-quality photos. It’s interesting that Google says “1 GB (and counting)” so the storage could increase like it does in Gmail.

Like in Flickr, you can also search the public photos posted by other people. Until today, you could search only your photos and the public photos uploaded by your contacts. Google wanted to be polite and ask you before including your public photos in the community search, so you must go to settings and enable this.

SAN FRANCISCO – Google Inc.’s free e-mail service will shed the final remnants of its invitation-only restrictions Wednesday, extending the reach of an increasingly popular product that has emerged as a vital cog in the online search leader’s expansion efforts.

invitations will no longer be required to join the nearly 3-year-old “Gmail” service in the United States, Canada, Mexico and a swath of Asian and South American countries where the Mountain View-based company previously limited the number of users. With those restrictions now lifted, Gmail will be open to all comers worldwide for the first time since Google unveiled the service on April Fool’s Day in 2004.

“It’s a pretty momentous time for Gmail,” said Keith Coleman, Google’s product manager for the service.

Although it will no longer require invitations to sign up, Gmail is retaining its “beta,” or test, status, signaling that Google still considers the service to be a work in progress. By MICHAEL LIEDTKE, AP Business Writer

In 2005, four Google (Charts) senior vice presidents received bonuses ranging from about $636,000 to nearly $838,000, according to a recent proxy statement.

During 2006, Google stock gained about 11 percent, slightly ahead of a 10 percent rise in the Nasdaq exchange.

Earlier this week, Google said quarterly profit nearly tripled, helped by a lower tax rate and expense controls, and that revenue jumped 67 percent to $3.21 billion.

Revenue growth is closely watched as investors gauge Google’s ability to capitalize on Web advertising against rivals such as Yahoo Inc. (Charts) and Microsoft Corp (Charts)

Want to change a picture’s filename from 671056398a.jpg to Lisa.jpg? In Picasa, it only takes seconds to re-name one picture or a group of pictures.
Make an album.

Use the “Albums” collection to tag your photos into quick groupings inside Picasa. Viewing and sharing the pictures you grouped under an album is easy – they make great slideshows and movies or you can email them to friends.
Add a star rating.

Give a gold star to any photo you love: it turns your favorites into visual standouts at a glance. Picasa even has a star search that reduces your entire photo collection to the best of the best in less than a second.

Keep one picture in multiple albums.

Password-protect collections.

Have photos you want to keep to yourself? You can add passwords to any of your Picasa collections (this does not affect which pictures you and otherscan see on your computer’s hard drive).

Send photos via email that are a joy to receive.

Take the guesswork out of sending photos. Picasa automatically resizes and attaches pictures to email messages at sizes your friends will be able to open. Works with most email programs, including Google’s Gmail.
Put pictures on your own site, for free.

Picasa Web Albums is the fast and easy way to put your photos on the web. Just select the photos in Picasa that you want to share and click to publish. In seconds, those photos are on your own web page, ready to share with
